On this week's habitat podcast we sit down with Tyler Ross to discuss the management of public lands. Public land is a hot topic right now among hunters. This topic continues to be debated as who has the right to manage and oversee these lands. Anything political is debatable, but what can't debate the fact that public lands should be void of active management.
Wilderness areas can be found across the country, however, these areas do not receive any habitat management. Disturbances like prescribed fire are often discouraged, yet the natural history of these regions show these disturbances were apart of the landscape. The terms preservation and conservation also bring about debates among those who manage and protect natural resources.
In addition to protecting natural resources, one of the biggest competitors and invaders to public lands are non-native invasive species. There are hundreds of invasive species that take over woodlands, fields, waterways etc.. Some of the largest invaders include bush honeysuckle, oriental bittersweet, Japanese Stiltgrass, hydrilla, spotted knapweed, and tree-of-heaven. There are many challenges that public lands face, let's not forget to push for active management of their natural resources during this time. Enjoy.Learn.Share! #ForLoveoftheLand
